WHAT IS CMM INSPECTION?
CMM inspection is the measurement of a part’s geometry with a coordinate measuring machine. The CMM moves a precision probe over the part, touching or scanning points on its surfaces and recording each point’s X, Y, and Z position. Software compares those points to the CAD model and drawing to report whether every feature is in tolerance.
Because the CMM measures in three dimensions against the part’s datums, it can verify GD&T callouts such as true position, profile, flatness, and perpendicularity that hand tools cannot check reliably. The result is an objective, repeatable record of the part as built.
