Prototype Machining Services
CARR’s prototype machining services support rapid development without sacrificing precision or quality. We work closely with engineering teams to turn early concepts into functional, production-ready parts, applying Design for Manufacturability insights from the start. Our ability to prototype with production-level processes reduces risk, shortens development cycles, and ensures a smooth transition to full-scale manufacturing.
CNC PROTOTYPING WITH PRODUCTION-LEVEL PROCESSES
Many prototypes are built on one-off setups that never carry into production. CARR machines prototypes on the same CNC equipment, CAM programs, fixtures, and inspection plans we use for production. What you test is what you will receive at volume.
That approach matters most on complex parts. Our 5-axis machining centers handle contoured surfaces and compound angles in a single setup, and our 3-axis and 4-axis machines cover prismatic parts efficiently, so each prototype runs on the process it will stay on.
RAPID PROTOTYPING CNC FOR FUNCTIONAL TESTING
Rapid prototyping with CNC machining produces parts in the actual end-use material, not a printed stand-in. That gives your team real data for:
- Fit checks against mating parts and assemblies
- Load, fatigue, and vibration testing
- Thermal and environmental testing
- Customer and program reviews that need flight-like or production-like hardware
Machined prototypes also hold the tolerances and surface finishes called out on the drawing, so test results reflect the final design.
PROTOTYPES WE MACHINE
Our prototype machining supports development programs across the industries we serve:
PROTOTYPE MATERIALS
We machine prototypes in the same alloys specified for production, including:
- Titanium and titanium alloys
- Inconel and other exotic metals
- 17-4 and 15-5 stainless steel
- 7075 and 2024 aluminum
- 4140 steel and hardened tool steels
- Brass and copper
See every alloy we cut on our materials page.
UNIQUE SOLUTIONS FOR UNIQUE PROBLEMS
Our multi-axis capabilities allow us to bring these tolerances to oddly angled parts and sub-assemblies.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is prototype machining?
Prototype machining is the CNC machining of early-stage parts from a CAD model so engineers can test fit, function, and performance in the real material before committing to production.
How is CNC prototyping different from 3D printing?
CNC prototypes are cut from the end-use material and hold drawing tolerances and surface finishes, so test results reflect production parts. 3D printing is useful for early form studies but often uses different materials and properties.
What materials can you use for prototypes?
We prototype in titanium, Inconel and other exotic metals, 17-4 and 15-5 stainless, 7075 and 2024 aluminum, 4140 and hardened tool steels, brass, and copper.
Can CARR move my prototype into production?
Yes. We prototype on production equipment and processes, so approved programs, fixtures, and inspection routines move straight into production without requalifying a new supplier.
What do I need to send for a prototype quote?
Send a 3D CAD model and a 2D drawing with tolerances, material, finish, and quantity through our RFQ page. Our engineers will review it for manufacturability as part of the quote.
Do prototypes come with inspection reports?
Yes. Prototype parts are verified with CMM inspection, and a first article inspection report can be supplied with the documentation package.
