Titanium Machining for Demanding Industries
Titanium machining requires skill, technology, and a deep understanding of how the material behaves under pressure. At CARR Machine & Tool, titanium machining is one of our core capabilities, refined through years of producing flight-critical, defense, and high-performance components.
We combine advanced 5-axis CNC systems, real-time process monitoring, and AS9100D-certified quality control to create titanium components that meet exacting requirements for aerospace, defense, and energy industries.
Titanium Machining Expertise Built on Experience
Titanium alloys such as Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo are known for their strength and corrosion resistance, but they also generate heat quickly and resist chip evacuation. Managing those variables is critical for consistent results.
- Multi-axis CNC equipment for complex geometry and deep-pocket features.
- High-pressure coolant systems to control heat and extend tool life.
- Adaptive CAM programming to optimize tool engagement and chip load.
- Temperature-controlled inspection labs to maintain dimensional accuracy.
Each titanium machining project begins with a thorough evaluation of part geometry and tolerance requirements. Our engineers plan tool paths, fixture design, and finishing operations to achieve repeatability across prototype and production volumes.
TITANIUM ALLOYS WE MACHINE
Each alloy cuts differently, and we set tooling, speeds, and coolant around the grade on your print:
- Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5): the most common aerospace titanium alloy, used for structural parts, fittings, and housings
- Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo: a near-alpha alloy chosen for strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures
- Other titanium grades and alloys: reviewed per project against your material certification requirements
For alloy properties and machining data, see our titanium CNC machining material page.
WHY TITANIUM IS DIFFICULT TO MACHINE
Titanium is hard on tools and easy to get wrong. Four properties drive most of the difficulty:
- Low thermal conductivity: heat stays at the cutting edge instead of leaving with the chip, which shortens tool life
- Work hardening: a dwelling or rubbing tool hardens the surface and makes the next pass harder
- Low modulus: thin walls and long features deflect and spring back, which affects tolerance
- Chemical reactivity: at high temperature titanium can gall and weld to the tool
We manage these with high-pressure coolant, sharp carbide tooling, constant chip load toolpaths, and rigid fixturing, then confirm the result on the CMM.
TITANIUM PARTS WE PRODUCE
Our custom titanium machining supports parts where weight, strength, and corrosion resistance all matter:
- Airframe brackets, fittings, and structural components
- Propulsion and engine-adjacent hardware
- Satellite and launch vehicle structures
- Defense system housings, mounts, and enclosures
- Robotic and automation components that need a high strength-to-weight ratio
Collaboration with Design Engineers
Precision starts long before the first cut. Our engineering team collaborates directly with customer design groups to review part models, manufacturability, and tolerance stack-ups. Early involvement allows us to refine setups, shorten lead times, and improve yield.
When working with titanium, seemingly minor design changes can make significant differences in machining efficiency and cost. CARR’s feedback helps customers reduce unnecessary operations while improving overall accuracy.
Inspection and Quality Management
Every titanium part is measured using coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) and optical inspection tools within a temperature-stable environment. All data is logged into our digital quality management system and included in the final documentation package.
Our customers in aerospace, defense, and advanced manufacturing rely on this process to verify that each part meets dimensional and performance expectations before it leaves the shop.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Which titanium alloys does CARR machine?
We regularly machine Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5) and Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo, and review other titanium grades per project against your material and certification requirements.
Why is titanium harder to machine than aluminum or steel?
Titanium holds heat at the cutting edge, work hardens when the tool dwells, deflects in thin sections, and can gall to the tool at high temperature. It needs rigid setups, sharp tooling, high-pressure coolant, and controlled feeds and speeds.
What industries use CARR's titanium machining?
Our titanium work supports aerospace, defense, space, energy, and automation programs that need high strength, low weight, and corrosion resistance.
Can you machine titanium prototypes?
Yes. We machine titanium prototypes with the same toolpaths, fixtures, and inspection methods used in production, which makes the move to volume predictable.
How are titanium parts inspected?
Every titanium part is measured on coordinate measuring machines and optical inspection tools in a temperature-stable lab. Results are logged in our quality system and included with the documentation package.
Is CARR ITAR registered for defense titanium work?
Yes. CARR is ITAR registered and AS9100D certified. CMMC certification is in progress.
